This Italian Region which is situated on a splendid Island, has a special statute and is certainly synonymous of holidays including: the sea, the beaches, the protected areas, the art present in each city from the smallest like Noto to the largest like Palermo (the Region's capital), and the Etna volcano which is the destination of winter holidays.
All this, and more, is Sicily: Panarea, Stromboli, Lipari, Salina, Vulcano, Ustica, Alicudi, Filicudi, Favignana, Pantelleria, Lampedusa, Linosa, and Marettimo are all the small islands that surround the main island of Sicily and that udoubtedly merit a visit due to the beauty of their natural environments, sea and sea beds.
It is advisable to book at least a week's holiday so as to allow time for a good visit to this Region and its main cities. It will not be difficult to find a hotel in Sicily where all the cities are tourist oriented and, therefore, the receptive structures are numerous and particularly well equipped.
In Palermo, the capital, it is advisable to visit the castle in Carini, Mondello, Monreale, Cefalù, Solunto, Bagheria, and Termini Imerese. Furthermore, from here it is also possible to reach Ustica, one of the islands off the shores of Sicily.
As well as following the Literature Pathways, those places made famous by renowned authors like Pirandello, Sciascia, Quasimodo, and Verga, one can decide to follow the medieval castle pathways.
In Sicily there are about 200 castles, all built so as to be unassailable fortresses, which illustrate the pride of their structure.
The following are but a few of the cities and towns where it is possible to visit these castles: Palermo, Messina, Enna, Ragusa, Catania, Racalmuto, Mussomeli, Naro, Falconara, Galgliano Castelferrato, Paternò, Aci Castello, Castelbuono, Montalbano Elicona, and many others.
Among the typical Sicilian products that one can find, the Sicilian cannolo must surely be mentioned. A pastry where ricotta and sweet candy come together within a fine pastry so as to allow the palate to enjoy an inimitable flavour.
