Cefalu'

With a population of more than 13,000 inhabitants, Cefalù is situated in the North coast of Sicily nestled at the foot of a rocky point. The town's origins date back to Prehistoric times as evidenced by the settlements found in the two caves situated in the Northern part of the promontory where the city was built. Its peculiar walls, of Megalithic origins, were built from a pre-Hellenic population who settled here in the 5th century B.C. Today, these walls surround the historic centre where tourists can admire the Temple of Diana, covered by stone slabs in a dolmenic style. Situated on the Rocca, the temple is a place of worship which was inhabited since ancient times as evidenced by the presence of water. Cefalù is an important archaeological centre with many ancient buildings and interesting sites. On the summit of the Rock lies the Castle whose construction dates back to the reign of Frederick. It is interesting to observe the structures and methods used to address the flow of water and how it was extended after the advent of the arms. Cefalù is a renowned seaside resort thanks to its crystal-clear waters and wonderful beaches. It is also an important cultural town. The main architectural and cultural attractions are its religious buildings such as the Cathedral, the Chiesa di S. Sebastiano and Chiesa di S. Andrea. Among the main buildings there are the Seminary and the Episcopal Palace, the Monte di Pietà (Pawn Agency), the Palazzo Atenasio Martino, Palazzo Legambi, Palazzo Maria, Palazzo Pirajno, Osterio Magno and the Lavatoio Medievale (Medieval public baths).
