Lipari

Lipari, island located off the Northern coast of Sicily, is part of the Aeolian volcanic archipelago, in the province of Messina; great part of the local economy resources come from tourism, not only cultural tourism but also visitors who enjoy the sun, the sea and relaxation. The first human settlements on the island can be traced back to the Neolithic Period. These first inhabitants were favoured by the abundance of obsidian , a natural glass that was widely used for making prehistoric tools. Afterwards, a flowering tradition of handcrafted ceramics became widespread in the area and was passed down over the following centuries almost unchangingly. As regards the origin of Lipari, some scientists state that it is a derivative of Liparo, king of Ausones, who conquered the area in 1400 b.C. In the wonderful Sicilian archipelago, tourist flows are always flourishing: we do not usually have the chance to admire wonderful Mediterranean landscapes set in candid expanses of porous pumice stones as well as in the elegant flows of dark obsidian. By taking a look at Lipari sea, its sun and exuberant nature, it is not difficult to understand the reasons why fleets of holidaymakers and visitors crowd the prestigious local accommodation facilities every year. It is also worth mentioning, the architectural and cultural attractions of Lipari island, including the imposing sixteenth-century Spaniard Castle, the majestic Norman Cathedral of San Bartolomeo and the allusive Church of Madonna delle Grazie. One finalattraction to be mentioned is the famous Aeolian Archaeological Museum, one of the most complete museums in the Mediterranean area.
