Otranto

Located in the Salento Peninsula, Otranto has a population of about 5,200 inhabitants and is a town and a commune in the Province of Lecce, in the Apulian Region. Otranto, with the lighthouse of Punta Palascia, is the most eastern town of Italy and it gives the name to the strait between Apulia and Albania, in the Mediterranean Sea. Otranto was conquered by many populations. One of the most famous battles was the one against the Turks where the city was almost destroyed and its inhabitants were massacred. Also the Monastery of San Nicola di Casole was destroyed: it housed the biggest library in the whole Western World that attracted many young students. One of the monks of the monastery was the author of the biggest floor mosaics in Europe housed in the Cathedral while the codes written by San Nicola are housed in the main libraries across Europe. Not to be missed are the Cathedral, the Castle restored by Frederik II and the Church of San Pietro in Byzantine style. A few kilometres away from the town there are the Laghi Alimini (Alimini lakes) and the Baia dei Turchi (Turks Bay).
