Monopoli

Monopoli, Puglian comune (municipality) in the province of Bari, extends along the Adriatic coast over a territory with flat lands and hills. Its economy is mainly based on its prosperous agriculture and the related food industries, however, the area offers outstanding tourist facilities to meet the needs of the growing number of tourists visiting the city specially in summer. Monopoli origins can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when it soon gained importance as a seaport after the destruction of ancient Egnatia. It was first conquered by the Byzantines and afterwards, by the Normans. In 1484, it was kept under Venetian rule and later, it was annexed to Spanish territory. The city is among the most valued seaside areas on the Adriatic Sea: picturesque coves, fantastic inlets and golden sandy beaches offer dreamlike holidays to those who decide to spend some days at the excellent hotels of the area, tasting the exquisite Puglian meals at the several restaurants and enjoying the local perfect seaside facilities. Do not miss the outstanding architectural attractions of Monopoli, like the Church of Santa Maria Amalfitana, built in 1100 and later restored, the Castello (Castle), dating back from the Federican period, the Cathedral, rebuilt in the XVII century, and the Palazzo Vescovile (Bishop’s Palace), famous for the Veronese works it hosts. There are several events which liven up the square of Monopoli: for example, the Festival of the Healing Saints Cosma and Damiano, the Commemoration of the arrival of the Madonna di Madia (Monopoli’s patron saint) and the related Sagra a mare (Sea Festival). Nearby there are some famous cities such as Alberoabello, Ostuni, Putignano and Castellana Grotte.
