Sassari

Sassari, capital of the homonymous province in the Sardinia region, is situated on the Nurra, Logudoro and Anglona limestone tableland. The first human settlements date back to the pre-historic age. However, the town was founded during the Middle Ages by the inhabitants of the ancient Roman port of Turris Lybisonis (current Porto Torres) who sought refuge in the mainland to escape the Saracen attacks from the sea. In 1323 Sassari was annexed to the Aragonese territories; in 1527, the city declined under the Spanish rule and after a brief Austrian dominion the town was annexed to the Savoy reign in the 18th century. Among the main cultural and architectural attractions there are the Duomo (Cathedral), the Fonte Rosello (Rosello Fountain), the Chiesa di Santa Maria di Bethlem (Church), the Chiesa di S. Antonio Abate (church), the Chiesa di S. Agostino (church), the ancient University, the Geo-minarological Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the Brigata Sassari Museum. Sassari can be easily reached by train, through the Highroad 131 or by plane arriving at Alghero Fertilia and Olbia Costa Smeralda Airports.
