Riomaggiore, a Ligurian comune (municipality) in the province of La Spezia, it is the eastern most city forming part of Cinque Terre. The city centre, situated along a steep and fertile valley, obtains most of its economical resources from a flourishing agriculture based on vineyards, olives and lemon plantations. Worth mentioning are the extremely famous tourist structures erected in the zone, particularly appreciated by thousands of holidaymakers and visitors that every year crowd inns, restaurants, guesthouses, bars, hotels, pizza parlours, pubs and bed & breakfast distributed on the area. History and legend merge to explain the origins of Riomaggiore: folklore has it, but it is not confirmed, that the original village was founded by some fugitives escaping from the iconoclastic persecution of the Byzantine empire in the VIII century. However, what is historically documented is the passage of the local administration under the Genoese authority in 1251. The places of artistic, architectural and cultural interest that are worth mentioning are the striking Castle on Cericò Hill, built between the XV and XVI centuries and the surprising Sanctuary of the Madonna of Montenero, refurbished in the 19th Festa Patronale century. Particularly appreciated by tourists are also the numerous folk events that liven up the life of the city square, among which stands out the St. Giovanni Battista’s Patronal Festival, when the inhabitants of Riomaggiore love to prepare the traditional salted rice cake, a typical Ligurian delicacy.
