Reggio Emilia
Reggio Emilia, main city of the Emilia – Romagna province, is situated in the Padana Valley, precisely along Via Emilia, and it is crossed by the Crostolo stream. The local economy gets its resources from the flourishing agricultural, commercial and industrial activities in the area. The city, inhabited since Prehistoric times, was an important Roman centre known as Regium Lepidi, so named after the Roman consul Marcus Aemilius Lepidus. After two centuries as a free comune, in the medieval period the area was subjected to the rule of some lords, who left very important evidences of their domination,- the Scalas, the Gonzagas, the Viscontis and the Estensis. The majestic Basilica della Madonna della Ghiara, cathedral that hosts precious paintings, is among the outstanding urban and architectural attractions in the area, together with the impressive Romanesque Duomo with a gabled façade, and the charming San Prospero Church, fully remodelled in the Sixteenth century. Significant are also the excellent museum facilities of the city, mainly articulated among the City Museums and the Reggio Emilia Galleries, the renowned Parmeggiani Gallery, the characteristic “Tricolore” Museum and the splendid Magnani Palace. Finally, other worth mentioning buildings of Reggio Emilia particularly appreciated by tourists, who every year cram local hotels and restaurants, are the Ariosto Theatre, the Christ’s Oratory, the Church of Saint Augustine and the Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace).
