Rapallo

Rapallo, a Genoese comune (municipality) situated on the promontory dominating the Gulf of Tigullio, is among the most important Liguria tourist sites. Due to its strategic position, visitors can easily reach Portofino and Santa Margherita. Its historical origins can be traced back to 700 BC, as shown by the archaeological finds unearthed in the Santa Anna area during the first years of last century; it is believed that the first inhabitants were Ligurians and Tigullians. A free comune since medieval times, in 1229 Rapallo swore fidelity to the maritime republic of Genoa, which rewarded its commitment promising an absolute and perpetual defensive protection. Rapallo’s local economy is mainly based on tourism, and the city is very much appreciated mostly by the German, French and Dutch; there are also medium-sized enterprises devoted to produce hand- crafted products, strongly connected to land resources. The Castle by the Sea (Castello sul mare) and the San Michele di Pagana Castle, the Baratta, Morelo and Fieschi Towers, the Town Hall Tower, the Porta delle saline (Saline Gate), Hannibal’s Bridge, the Tigullio Villa, the Holy Trinity Chapel (also known as the Oratory of “the Whites”), the remains of the Cenobio di San Tommas (a monastery), the Pizzo and the Tombolo Museums, and the Attilio & Cleofe Gaffoglio Museum are among the most important architectural and cultural attractions of the city.
