Porto San Giorgio

Porto San Giorgio is at the heart of Piceno seaside, in the province of Ascoli Piceno in the Marche region. It is presented to visitors as a modern tourist destination. As regards connections, this city is well integrated as it has its own motorway exit (A 14), which makes it easily accessible. The nearest Airports are Ancona (60 km) and Pescara (150 km). Porto San Giorgio is a tourist and fishing port by excellence, in fact, it is one of the largest and best equipped ports in Europe with 140,000 m2 of water area. It can house around 900 ships; the section devoted to fishing is also very vast. Thanks to its green spaces and care for the environment as well as to its clear unpolluted waters, the port facilities have been awarded the Blue Flag. In the last years, the tourism sector has grown a lot, but always preserving the quality of life that makes of this town an ideal holiday destination as well as the perfect place where to spend a weekend. The modern Hotels and accommodation facilities perfectly match the local gastronomic traditions. Local cuisine is traditionally very light, fish- or vegetable-based, but with a touch of meat or fried food, and it always goes well with the famous Tuscan olives. The traditional dishes are: Garagoli (periwinkles with fennel and lemon peel), brodetto (crustacean consommé) and vincigrassi (a kind of lasagne seasoned with chicken livers and ham). Finally, a curiosity: during local festivals such as the "festa del mare" (sea festival), the Padella gigante (a huge saucepan, approx. 4 metres in diameter and with 1,000-litre capacity) is used to fry tons of squid. Porto San Giorgio has approximately 16,000 inhabitants and it stretches over 8 km2 with a density of 1,983 persons per km.
