Pordenone

Pordenone, capital city of the Province of the Friuli region, is one of the most beautiful places of North-Eastern Italy. It can be easily reached as it has a railway station and motorway connexions to A28; it is not far away from Trieste Regional Airport and Marco Polo Airport in Venice. The origins of the city date back to the High Middle Ages and its name derives from its original geographical position, from the Latin Portus Naonis as a it was a fluvial port on the Noncello River. In 1278, the city was handed over to the Habsburg, whereas it was acquired by the Republic of Venice in the XVI century. Back under Austrian dominion after the decline of La Serenissima (Most Serene Republic of Venice), Pordenone underwent a Napoleonic parenthesis before being annexed to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866. Pordenone’s architectural and urban attractions are truly interesting such as the beautiful Corso Vittorio Emanuele II street with spectacular Gothic arcades, the majestic Duomo (cathedral) of St. Mark, remodelled during the Baroque period, the typical Palazzo comunale (Town hall) from which emerges a splendid Tower dating back to the Cinquecento (XVI century), the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli (Our Lady of the Angels), rich of famous frescoes, the Church of St. George, with enchanting Doric columns, and the imposing Castello di Torre (Tower Castle), located not far away from the magnificent Roman villa of the same name. Not less important is Pordenone’s excellent circuit of museums, very much appreciated by tourists and visitors, arranged between the fascinating Town Museum of Art, the interesting Town Museum of Science and the historical Archaeological Museum of Western Friuli. Last but not least, is the “Pordenone Legge”- book fair and meet & greet the authors, one of the most important cultural events organised by the Town Hall, which every September witnesses guests of international prestige patronising this enchanting literary show
