Ponza
Ponza, a typical Latian island off shore the Gulf of Gaeta, forms part of the fairy-tale Pontine Islands archipelago together with Palmarola, Gavi and Zannone, and it is one of the magnificent jewels of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The local economy resources centre mainly on the prestigious tourist activities in the area, not to forget the income obtained from the traditional activity of fishing. This volcanic archipelago has been inhabited since the Neolithic period; in turn, it was populated by different cultures until conquered by the Romans who did not miss the chance to annex this sea jewel to their domains. The island hosted a strong Benedictine presence in the IX century, as reflected by the several monasteries spread all along the area. The natural landscapes the island offers its captivated holidaymakers and visitors are among the most enchanting of Italy: anyone who has been fortunate enough to enjoy and admire the majestic rocky cliffs, the spectacular sea grottoes and the fairy-tale coastal inlets can easily understand why the restaurants, inns, guest-houses, bed&breakfast and hotels of Ponza are always packed. Worth mentioning among the several spectacular tourist and cultural attractions of Ponza are the extremely famous Grotte di Pilato (Pilate’s coves), also known to host the ruins of ancient Roman aqueducts, and the Collina della Madonna (Our Lady’s hill) where the remains of the majestic Villa Romana (Roman villa) can be found. Last, but not least, are the 18th century Port and the underground Greek Tomb in Guarini. Local holiday tours under the sun, along the sea and in total relax, instead, foresee a mandatory stop at the extremely famous Chiaia di Luna (Half-moon) beach, the Faraglione or giant stacks of La Guardia, the renowned village of Le Forna and the typical urban area of Cala d’Inferno.
