Palau is a commune of the Olbia-Tempio province with a population of less than 3,000 inhabitants. It is the gateway to the archipelago of La Maddalena. The main economic resource in the Gallura region is tourism. Palau was awarded the Blue Flag in recognition of its pristine waters and the efficiency of its tourist services. Its origins date back to 19th century when farmers of the surrounding rural areas settled here originating the first inhabited centres. The main historical event is the resistance of the local farmers and shepherds against the French armies in 1793, who were forced to beat a hasty retreat. From 1959, the autonomous commune of Palau boasts the main natural attractions of the Region such as the Roccia dell'Orso (Bear Rock): the atmospheric agents have amazingly transformed this granite rock (122 m) to unmistakably appear like a bear.
