Nuoro

Main city in the Northern-Central part of Sardinia, Nuoro is situated on the upper Cedrino Basin, on a granite upland at the bottom of Mount Ortobene. Originally a Nuragic settlement which was not part of the Punic colonies, it was one of the last territories to be annexed to the Roman Empire. Around the 12th century, Nugoro became a Spanish feud till the 17th century when it became part of the Orani Marquisate. During the 19th century, the city developed from an economic and administrative point of view and during Fascism it was made a province. Nuoro offers its visitors many cultural and architectural attractions such as the house where the famous writer Grazia Deledda was born, the Art Museum, the Etnographic Museum, the Deleddiano Museum (dedicated to Grazia Deledda), the Life Museum and the Museum of Local Sardinian Customs, the Church of Nostra Signora della Solitudine, the Church of Madonna di Valverde and other important Nuragic tombs. Among the most important local events there are the Sagra del Redentore (Christian Festival), a Festival in honour of Sant'Antonio Abate and Nuoro Jazz, a seminary on jazz music. Nature lovers can go trekking around the town of Oliena and in the marvellous landscape of Gennargentu and Orosei Gulf.
