Montesilvano, comune (municipality) in the province of Pescara in the Abruzzo region, extends near the Salt mines; every year, the economy of the area draws important and constant resources from crowds of holidaymakers staying at its prestigious inns, hotels, guest-houses, bed & breakfast and restaurants. The town area is currently divided into Montesilvano Colle, the old urban centre, and Montesilvano Spiaggia, more modern and the heart of the local life. Although according to some sources the birth of the city dates back to 872 AC, the first document in which the town’s place name is expressly quoted goes back to 1440, to the times of the Norman king Ruggero. During the next centuries it was object of numerous transfers of power, including the Aragon period and that under the rule of Michele di Valenza. However, the roots of this seaside resort dates further back as the ancient evidences of the prestigious saline romane (Roman salt mines) have perfectly shown. The coastal area is one of the most appreciated in the Adriatic Riviera: Montesilvano prestigious beaches, golden sand and spectacular waters are accompanied by the best facilities for fun and sports- like bike path, the sports hall, football fields, tennis courts and the bowls green. Some of the artistic and architectural attractions that the town also offers to tourists and visitors include the charming Church of the Madonna della Neve, the famous Monumento ai Caduti (War Memorial) and some characteristic medieval buildings.
