Matera

Matera, Lucanian province on the Western Murge is internationally known due to the “Sassi” (ancient quarters of the town) which in 1993 were declared World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. The “Sassi” (Barisano and Caveoso) are the ancient quarters of the primitive urban nucleus, characterised by the particular housing structures directly dug into the tufo (rock) itself sheltered by the steep slopes of the “Gravina” gorge. Among the most important cultural and architectural attractions in the city, there are the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art, the D’Errico Art Gallery, the “Domenico Ridola” National Museum , the panoramic street of the Sassi, the Church of San Pietro Caveoso, the Church of San Pietro Barisano, Santa Maria de Idris Church and the 13th century Duomo (cathedral). Matera ‘s charming landscape recalling ancient times has always allured not only a great number of tourists that cram hotels and restaurants but also the international movie industry. Matera has been the location for very important films, such as “The Passion of the Christ” by Gibson, “Del perduto amore” (“Of Lost Love”) by Placido, “La Lupa” (“The She-devil”) by Lattuada and “Il Vangelo secondo Matteo” (“The Gospel according to Matthew”) by Pasolini.
