Mantua

It is the capital city of the Lombardy province. Mantua has been in the poets’ songs for its romantic atmosphere; the monuments, the Mincio River with its rapids and the Superior lake with the lotus flowers, the muffled atmospheres of the squares invaded with fog... Aldous Huxley, Charles Baudelaire, Charles Dickens, and Italian poets such as Orio Vergani, Alfredo Panzini, Guido Piovene, among others made songs and gave praise to it. In the 12th century, to make the city safe, the Mincio River was dammed forming 4 lakes turning the city into an island. The city was divided in the middle by a channel that connected the Superior lake to the Inferior lake. In the 17th century, there was a great flood after which the river started carrying and depositing a huge quantity of sediments in the lakes, turning them into swamps. To redevelop the area, the South section of the lake was dried up, so Mantua remained surrounded by water at three sides only. Some Lotus flowers, typical of the East, were introduced in the Superior Lake and found there a proper habitat to reproduce. The Middle lake instead, has a typical plant of the area- the water chestnut (Trigol). You cannot miss in Mantua: The Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace)- made up of a complex of buildings all connected among them, with different hanging and non-hanging courtyards, and large gardens. The Sala degli Sposi (Wedding Chamber) by Andrea Mantegna and devoted to Ludovico Gonzaga and Barbara of Brandenburg hosts very important frescoes, among others in the building. The Palazzo Te - By Giulio Romano, ordered by Federico II Gonzaga, it is a building that rose on a woody island, in the middle of a lake now dried up. It was built for Federico II’s lover, Isabella Boschetti. The internal halls are decorated with frescos according to themes, like the Amore e Psiche (Love and Psyche) chamber, dei Giganti (Giants) chamber and dei Cavalli (Horses) chamber. Called the "Palace of the clear deceits", it hides numerous symbols and myths in its chambers and frescos. Rotonda di San Lorenzo - Round-based church, dating back to the 11th century. There are still traces of frescoes dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. At the beginning of the XXth century, being unconsecrated, it was used as a warehouse. Then it recovered its religious function. Basilica di Sant'Andrea - Designed by Leon Battista Alberti, its construction began in the 14th century and continued for 300 years. The relic of the Preziosissimo Sangue di Cristo (Christ’s Precious Blood) can be found in a crypt; and the funerary monument by Andrea Mantegna, the court painter of the Gonzaga family, can be found in one of the chapels. Palazzo della Ragione (Wisdom Palace) - The construction dates back to 1200. The ground floor had different workshops, while the upper floor was a court. We can still see numerous frescos decorating the room, which could be reached through a steep staircase under the Torre dell’Orologio (Tower of the Clock). The astronomical clock is at the top of the Tower. Other places to visit are: Palazzo del Podestà (Podestà Palace), Duomo (Cathedral), San Sebastiano Temple, Mantegna’s House, Palazzo D'Arco. Gonzaga", National Virgilian Academy of Sciences, Literature and Arts, "Norsa Torrazzo" Jewish Synagogue, Numismatic Collection of the Banca Agricola Mantovana, "Arte ed Arti" Exhibition galley.
