Lucca

Lucca, capital city of the province of Tuscany, it is situated on the southern plains, to the left of river Serchio; the local economy is supported by prosperous commercial and industrial activities, but there are also very important resources coming from the tourist flows, attracted by the beauty and uniqueness of this splendid city of art. The first human settlements in the area were the Etruscans, even if soon after, the Roman rule extended actually to the Lucchese lands, quickly promoting it to capital city of Tuscia in the Carolingian age. In 1119, Lucca became an independent community, starting a long period of wealth. Passed to the Pisa rule, in the 14th century it succeeded in becoming independent and maintained its autonomy until Napoleon’s arrival. In the following years it was annexed at first to the Borbonic territories and then to Tuscany of Lorena. The artistic and cultural attractions in the city are very much praised by tourists and visitors: the majestic Duomo, famous for the marvellous Ilaria del Carretto’s Vault and the Holy Face Temple inside, deserves to be mentioned. There is also the suggestive Church of St. Michele in Foro, with its superb thirteenth-century façade, the famous Palazzo Mansi, centre of the Pinacoteca Nazionale ( National picture gallery), and the architectural complex of the Guinigi Houses, built in 1500 in Romanesque style. Among the Lucca main exhibitions and events, there are the Summerfestival, which hosts international musicians and singers, Lucca comics, among the main European comic fairs, and the Palio di San Paolino, a traditional medieval commemoration in summer.
