Livorno

Livorno capital city of the Tuscan province, extends on a flat section of the Tyrrhenian coast. Besides developing industrial and commercial activity benefited by the presence of the historical port, the city presents notable tourist structures that make the site one of the most frequented seaside areas of the region. Ardenza and Antignano are the most appreciated seaside towns of the coastal area, always cherished by lovers of holidays full of sun and sand. The foundation of the first urban aggregate in the area dates back to the 10th century, to the time of the building of the impressive Castle. The proximity to the port was the main reason for the subsequent urban fortifications, developed to the point of making Livorno a defensive area in Pisa. Annexed to the Viscount, Genoese and Florentine territories, it experienced a particularly flourishing period in 1500, when it enjoyed the intensification of commercial traffic, after the Pisa port zone developed inland. Among the main architectural and urban attractions of the town, there are many worth mentioning such as the very famous Monument of four Moors, the colossal Fortezza Vecchia (Old Fortress), the majestic Terrazza Mascagni (Mascagni Terrace), the huge Fanale (Lighthouse) and the extraordinary Cisternone (large reservoir). Besides, the spectacular Town Aquarius Diacinto Cestoni, the suggestive Jewish Museum Yeshivà Marini and the fascinating Provincial Museum of Mediterranean History are very appreciated by visitors. Among the events and shows of greater success in Livorno, we can mention the Santa Giulia Festival, the Sant’Antonio Fair, the Ciampi Prize (music festival), the Grape Juice Free Music Festival, the Painting Review at the Rotonda di Ardenza and the Gare Remiere (Rowing Summer Competitions).
