Limone Sul Garda

Limone sul Garda. Little town in the province of Brescia, located on the shores of the Lake Garda Its name probably derives from the Latin word “Limem", boundary. Limone based its economy on fishing, and oil and lemon production. Its was isolated from the bordering little towns until 1932, when the Gardesana road was built. Before this date, this town could be reached through the mountains or the lake only. Due to this connection, it becomes known little by little by most tourists from Northern Europe. Nowadays, it is one of the most flowering tourist towns of Lake Garda. This town is famous for its oil production, and its lemon groves; its territory is the Northernmost land where lemons can grow. Another peculiarity of Limone sul Garda is its inhabitants’ blood; in 1979, it was discovered by chance that a protein, the Apolipoprotein A-1Milano, removes fat from the blood preventing atherosclerosis and heart attacks. In Limone sul Garda, you can visit the Church of San Pietro – on the road to Tremosine, also called S. Pietro in Oliveto. Of monastic origin and Romanesque style with one nave, you can find very beautiful frescoes (one of them, in the apse, represents San Pietro) that were discovered in 1989 after a reconstruction. The parish Church of S. Benedetto, in Como, was rebuilt in 1691 by Andrea Pernis on the ruins of a Romanesque church whose origins may be traced back to the beginnings of the XI century. It houses many masterpieces, marble altars, a baptistery dating from the year 500 built at the will of S. Carlo Borromeo, an organ placed over the central access and a beautiful set of sculptures representing The Annunciation by Benedetti. The historical centre, with its alleys full of flowered balconies, squares and staircases, is tinged with a magic and antique air. The Church of San Rocco - Located in the historical centre, it was built in the middle of the 16th century in gratitude for the people from Limone who survived the pestilence that struck and killed victims in a great part of Northern Italy during that period. This church is surrounded by rocks, the lake and lemon groves and can be reached through a long staircase decorated with flowers and plants that grow vigorously thank to the mild weather in the Lake Garda. Le Santelle –People from Limone are very religious; this is evident the presence of the frescoes painted on the walls, the crosses and the aedicules in the crossroads of the town.
