Lecco
Lecco is one of the most important cities in Lombardia region as well as the capital of Lecco province. It lies in a basin delimited by the Prealps on one side and by Lake Como on the other. The shape of the surrounding mountains, heavily hollowed, denotes that the land is the result of several subsequent glaciations. The city has Celtic origins. It was settled around 1000 BC, when some groups of Celts occupied the Valsassina and Brianza area. The name Lecco may derive from Leuki, name of a Gallic town, or, most likely, from the Roman Leucus, glade. In 200 BC its inhabitants saw the Romans arrival, who turned it into a strategic point as a passage of their own troops. Ruins of a castrum (military camp) have been found in the area. Famous for acting as background to the events of Renzo and Lucia, The Betrothed, Lecco is the birthplace of their literary father, Alessandro Manzoni. Manzonian route: it is possible to visit historic buildings that used to be theatres where Manzonian characters feats were narrated. Lecco is a good starting point to visit and walk to the surrounding mountains, as well as to enjoy activities in the lake, water sports and outings on boats. Regarding sports, Lecco has two historic clubs: Calcio Lecco (1912) and the Società Canottieri Lecco
