Latina
Latina, capital of the Lazio province, is placed at the centre of the Pianura Pontina, at around 60 km to the south of Rome. Its local economy is vivacious not only as regards agriculture and commerce but also the industrial sector. The city was founded in 1932 with the name of Littoria at Mussolini's will, on drained marshlands around the “Quadraro”, seriously damaged by the Second World War bombing. The town changed its name after the fall of Fascism. Latina is a wonderful example of the rationalist town planning characteristic of the 1930’s: structured around an octagonal core and developed in the two central squares: Piazza della Libertà and Piazza del Popolo, the area presents many elements of the initial project in spite of the outstanding expansion work carried out in the 1960’s. We mention, as an example, some of the buildings most appreciated by visitors: the characteristic Palazzo del Tribunale, the typical Palazzo delle Poste and the historical Ospedale Vecchio. Those who love the sea, sun and beaches can find, very near the city, the Lido di Latina, the main seaside resort of the area located less than 10 km away: the local landscape is typified by the three famous Astura, Fogliano and Foce Verde towers. Finally, we point out the presence of the Parco del Circeo in the area, and its fascinating lakes. You can reach the town, to stay in renowned hotels and dine in the first-class local restaurants, through the Pontina clearway or taking the Rome—Naples railway line; the construction of a motorway connection is under consideration.
