Gorizia

Gorizia, capital of the homonymous province in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region, is situated on the banks of the Isonzo River, surrounded by the Collio hills. The local economy is mainly based on agriculture, commerce and industry. The production of wine is particularly important, as well as the culinary sector which is considered one of the main attractions of the region. The town has Medieval origins and it actively participated in many battles for conquering the surrounding territories. In the 16th century it was annexed to the Austrian empire and it enjoyed a period of splendour and prosperity, both from an economical and a cultural point of view. In 1918 it was annexed to the Italian territory. Among the cultural and architectural attractions of Gorizia there is the Duomo, a magnificent example of religious building, remodelled several times since 1300, with a splendid Chapel in Gothic style, housing marvellous frescoes dating back to the 15th century. Not to be missed is also the Castle, built in the 12th century, enlarged several times up to the 16th century. Tourists really appreciate the cultural beauties the city has to offer, such as the Chiesa di Sant’Ignazio and the Neptune Fountain, designed by Pacassi. Art and history lovers are spoilt for choice. In fact the town offers several museums such as the Museo della Grande Guerra (Museum dedicated to the First World War), the Museo della Storia e dell’Arte (History and Art Museum) and the Fondazione Palazzo Coronini Cronberg. In Gorizia many musical events are organized such as the famous Concorso internazionale di canto corale dedicated to C.A. Seghizzi (International Choir Competition), the Premio per violinisti Rodolfo Ripize (Violin competition) and the recent Concorso Europeo di Chitarra Classica (Guitar competition). Not to be missed is also the Concorso per la sceneggiatura cinematografica S. Amidei (Film Script Competition).
