Fiumicino
Fiumicino is a municipality in the Rome province, situated in the Lazio Region. Located on the Tyrrhenian coast, North of Tevere delta, the town has gained importance after the construction of "Leonardo da Vinci" international airport in the '50s, one of the major airports in Europe. In the municipal area of Fiumicino there are other towns such as Isola Sacra, located in the delta of the river: this town is important from a cultural and archaeological point of view thanks to the excavations of the Necropolis di portus, well preserved during the centuries. Among other interesting sites there are the remains of the Paelochristian Basilica of Sant'Ippolito and the magnificent Museo delle Navi (Ships' Museum) which houses five ships. The area is a favourite destination for all gourmets thanks to the specialties of the local cuisine that tourists can taste in the various restaurants. The area around Fiumicino is well known for bird watching: here you can admire fine specimens of a grey heron and kingfisher.
