Diano Marina

Situated between Capo Cervo and Capo Erta, Diano Marina is a tourist seaside resort in the province of Imperia with a population of approximately 6,000 inhabitants. The first settlements in the area date back to the Late Palaeolithic period, but the first permanent villages were built during the Iron Age, as evidenced by the archaeological remains found in the territory. In the year 200 B.C. it was conquered by the Romans who worshipped Diana, the Goddess of the Hunt from where the name of the town originated. Later, the Saints Nazario and Celso evangelized the whole area. In the 12th century, Diano Marina became a free commune and in 1275 became allied with the Maritime Republic of Genoa. Diano Marina is a well renowned seaside resort and every year visitors cramming the modern and well equipped accommodation facilities can enjoy a great number of water sports, from sailing to beach volley, and diving. You can also hire a boat to admire the dolphins and the whales living in the sea surrounding Diano Marina. Particularly interesting is also the Municipal Museum housing important remains dating to the Roman and pre-Roman Period. The Church of Sant'Antonio Abate is also worth a visit.
