Catanzaro

Catanzaro rises in the central part of the Squillace Gulf, the narrowest point in Italy, since only 35 km separate the Ionic Sea from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The old town is built over three hills: San Trifone, Vescovado and San Giovanni, the highest hill. The peculiar conformation of its hilly territory didn't benefit to the town development. However, Catanzaro extends up to the Ionian Sea and boasts 8 km of coastline. The town's origins date back to the 10th century when Catanzaro was conquered by the Byzantines. Later, the inhabitants moved to the hills in order to protect themselves from the attacks of the Saracens. Between the 16th and the 17th centuries, Catanzaro became well renowned for the manufacturing of silk, but its reputation declined after the plague in 1668. Evidence of the historical past of the town is the remains of the castle built by Robert Guiscard. You can enjoy a magnificent view of the castle from Viadotto Morandi (Morandi Bridge), 231 m long and greatly lit at night. The Norman Castle rises on the San Giovanni hill and in the past it was used as a prison. The history of Catanzaro's coat of arms is also important. The central part shows an imperial eagle: it is a privilege that Emperor Charles V granted to the inhabitants of Catanzaro in recognition of their military qualities. Another important element of the coat of arms is the shield representing the three hills where the town rises. In the beak of the eagle there is a light blue ribbon reading "Sanguinis effusione". Other important tourist attractions in Catanzaro are the Teatro Politeama (Theatre), the Auditorium, the Chiesa di San Giovanni, the Norman Tower, Via Arcivescovado e Via Menni Ippolito, the Ponte Bisantis also known as Viadotto Morandi (Morandi Bridge), the Chiesa Immacolata and Piazza Matteotti.
