Brindisi

Brindisi lies in the Salento peninsula, directly on the Adriatic Sea. Thanks to its magnificent natural port, the town is an important trading centre. Other important economic resources are agriculture and local industry. The Messapi populations built the first human settlements in the area, but thanks to the Romans Brindisium became a busy port, directly linked to the capital through the Via Appia. The area was invaded by Goths, Byzantines, Lombards and Saracens. Brindisi enjoyed a period of splendour and prosperity under the Norman, Swabian, Angevin rule, while the Spanish dominion saw the beginning of a period of regression. Brindisi offers many architectural, urbanistic and cultural attractions to visitors, cramming every year its prestigious hotels and restaurants. Among the main sites there are the Colonne Romane (Roman Columns), the symbol of the town, the Portico dei Cavalieri Templari with the adjacent Ribezzo Museum, the Tancredi Fountain (Roman age) and the Monument to the Italian Sailor, with the war memorial. Other important monuments are the Swabian Castle where Vittorio Emanuele III stayed for a while, the Aragonese Castle, known as Forte a Mare, the famous archaeological sites at San Pietro degli Schiavoni and the Ethnic Museum of Salento Civilization and the Agrilandia Museum. Brindisi boasts also many churches such as the beautiful Cathedral, the elegant Church of San Paolo, the sumptuous Church of Santa Teresa and the typical Church of Cristo.
