Ancona Tourist Information

Ancona is the centre of the Province of Ancona and the Capital of the Marche Region. It emerges over a hill or a promontory strangely shaped as a bent arm. In fact, the name “Ancona” derives from the Ancient Greeks and it is a very slightly modified transliteration of the Greek term "Ankon” meaning “elbow”. That is how it was named "Ancona" in 387 BC.

Ancona is part of the well-known Conero Riviera and it is the largest town of the area.
Ancona is a town with a great historical tradition, a meeting point for different peoples and cultures.
Important churches and palaces overlook one of the most important harbours, the Port, from which thousands of travellers depart every day heading mainly to Greece, Turkey, Croatia, and, Albania and Montenegro,

The Port of Ancona is the most important fishing port of the Adriatic, and a leader due to the number of shippings and overall tonnage of goods traded. The town offers services and shopping malls. The Port of Ancona is a gateway that favours imports and exports with the East and Eastern Countries due to its privileged geographic position.
Since the town is right by the sea, it has several beaches; the most important of them being the Passetto- a high coastline beach with quite a few rocks. The one called Seggiola Del Papa (the Pope’s Chair) is the city’s identifying symbol. Portonovo is a highly frequented beach. It can be reached by tarmac road, is equipped to receive tourists and can be distinguished due to its white and rounded stones.

This is a list of the main Ancona Monuments:
The Lazzaretto (Lazaret), Porta Pia (Pious Gate), the Le Muse (The Muses) Theatre, the church of Santisimo Sacramento (Holy Sacrament), Benincasa Palace, Loggia dei Mercanti (Merchants’ Loggia), the church of Santa Maria della Piazza, the Arch of Trajan, San Ciriaco Cathedral, the Roman Amphitheatre, Palazzo del Senato (the Senate House), Palazzo degli Anziani (Palace of the Elders), Chiesa del Gesù (Jesus Church), the church of San Francesco delle Scale, Piazza del Plebiscito (Plebiscite Square), the church of San Domenico and the Monumenti ai Caduti (War Memorial) at Passetto.
