Alghero

Alghero, a municipality in the province of Sassari, has a population of 40,000 inhabitants. Its name derives from the local expression "S'Alighera", meaning place of the algae (seaweed). The first evidence of human presence in the area date back to the Neolithic period, but the first settlements date back to the year1500 B.C. The town boasts a rich archaeological heritage, unusual in Italy, such as the Nuragic Palace at Palmavera, the necropolis at Anghelo Ruju and the area of Sant'Imbenia.

The wonderful coast of Alghero, with its marvellous sandy beaches and impressive rocks, is one of the favourite destinations on the island. Alghero offers a wide choice of accommodation facilities such as hotels and restaurants. The Riviera del Corallo is famous for its extraordinary landscape and crystal-blue waters, but also for its pulsing nightlife and clubs.

The most important monuments in Alghero are Palazzo d’Albis, Palazzo Machin, Torre del Portal, Torre dell’Esperò Reial, Torre de Sant Jaume, the Bastioni (Bastions) and the Ponte Romantico (Romantic Bridge); among the cultural and architectural buildings there are the Cattedrale di Santa Maria (Cathedral), the Church of Misericordia, the Santuario di Valverde, the Church of San Francesco and the Church of San Michele.
