Alessandria

Alessandria, one of the main towns in Piedmont region, is located at the confluence of Tanaro and Bormida rivers.

The cultural centre of Alessandria is the superb Piazza della Libertà, built on the wishes of Napoleon on the place where the ancient cathedral stood, which was demolished in 1803. Next to Piazza della Libertà there are the Palazzo del Municipio (Town Hall) also known as Palazzo Rosso (Red Palace) for the colour of its façade with its unique three-dial clock; Palazzo Ghilini, today seat of the Prefecture and Province offices; other interesting monuments in Baroque style are the Palazzo delle poste (Post Office Building) decorated with a mosaic of 38 meters long by Gino Severini; the Palazzo Cuttica di Cassine, that will house the municipal museum.

Not to be missed is the new Neoclassical Cathedral (1840-1849) situated a few steps away from the historical centre of Alessandria. It houses the wood statue of Madonna della Salve, while on the left-side of the façade you can see the statue of Galiaudo, a quick-witted peasant and hero of the city who fought against the siege of Emperor Frederick I. Other interesting monuments are the Chiesa di Santa Maria di Castello, dating back to the 15th century, located in the homonymous square near Via dei Guasco, and Palazzo Guasco, with its superb Baroque façade.  The triumphal arch built in 1768 in honour of Vittorio Amedeo II and Maria Ferdinanda di Spagna is situated in Via Dante.

The Cittadella, a monumental military building, is located on the banks of river Tanaro and was built during the Savoy dynasty in the 18th century. Now a property of the Military Forces, it is not always open to the public. This fortress has a star-shaped plan, with six bastions surrounded by trenches.
Soon the Museo Civico (Municipal Museum) will be relocated in a new building, Palazzo Cuttica di Cassine and it will house various masterpieces such as:  two Flemish hangings of exquisite workmanship, an interesting polyptych by Gandolfino da Roreto, the vestments of Pope Pius V and the chorales for the convent of S. Croce di Bosco Marengo ordered by the Pope.

Among the most important events held in Alessandria there are Fraskettando SkaBluesJazz Festival, a musical festival for up-and-coming bands.
A very evocative event is the Recollection of the Battle of Marengo won by Napoleon at Spinetta on June 14, 1800. Austria, France and Italy remember this ancient battle, fighting against each other.
The Castello di Marengo (Marengo Castle) is the ideal location where the majority of events take place, especially during the summertime.
