Alba of Cuneo

Alba is the second largest town in the province of Cuneo.

With a polygonal plan, Alba was originally a Roman settlement. Still today, you can admire a fortified doorway and a few walls, together with some buildings covered with mosaics and marbles.
Alba was known as the town of the one hundred towers, all built between the 14th and the 15th centuries.

Among the most important artistic and cultural monuments of the medieval period there are
the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo (Cathedral), dating back to the 12th century; the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista housing the Nativity by Macrino d'Alba; the Chiesa di Santi Cosma e Damiano, the Santuario di Nostra Signora della Moretta (Sanctuary), the Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena, the Chiesa di Santa Caterina, the Chiesa di San Paolo, the Chiesa di Cristo Re and the Chiesa di San Domenico.

The ideal period to visit Alba is during the autumn when the city is decorated with coloured drapes to celebrate the Palio degli Asini (Donkey race) and the Giostra delle Cento Torri (One hundred tower tournament) held on the first weekend of October. This is also when the National Truffle Festival takes place and the aroma of truffles, together with dolcetto and nebbiolo wines, spreads in the air. This is one of the most important events at an international level and many tourists are attracted by the desire to taste this valuable product.
