Alassio

Situated in the Liguria region, Alassio is a town located in the province of Savona with a population of around 11,000 inhabitants. It is a renowned seaside resort in the Riviera Ligure di Ponente (Ponente Riviera).

The origins of Alassio date back to 900 A.C. as pointed by the ancient settlements that have been found near the little church of Sant'Anna ai Monti. According to the legend, the name Alassio derives from that of Adelasia, daughter of Emperor Otto I.

In the '60s, together with Portofino and Sanremo, Alassio became the favourite destination of the international jet-set. In those years, thanks to Mario Berrino, a painter from Alassio, with the support of Hernest Hemingway, the tradition of the famous Muretto di Alassio began, i.e. a rustic low wall with tiles signed by various celebrities. Alassio is also famous for its international beauty contest,  Miss Muretto, which has gained an international success, and one  of the most important competitions in Italy.

Alassio is also famous for its natural beauties and in 2006 it has been awarded the remarkable Blue Flag in recognition of the services offered by its leisure port. Alassio is also part of the Mountain Community Ingauna.

Other places to see are: the Chiesa di Sant'Anna ai Monti, a church that can be admired by travelling from Alassio to Albenga, the Torre di Vegliasco (Vegliasco Tower), the ruins of the Torre Santa Croce (Santa Croce Tower), the Mediaeval ruins near the Santuario della Madonna della Guardia (Sanctuary of Madonna della Guardia), the collegiate church of Sant'Ambrogio, the Cappella Madonna del Vento (Chapel of Madonna del Vento), the Torrione Saraceno (Saracen turret mast), the English Library.
